George Carlin on Religion

Exploring Religious Themes

Sun Worship
: “I can see the sun, ok? Unlike some other gods I could mention, I can actually see the sun. I’m big on that. If I can see something, I don’t know, it kind of helps the credibility along, you know?” – George Carlin

Sun Worship has been defined as “the worship or adoration of the sun as the symbol of the deity, or as the most glorious object in nature, or as the source of light or heat”. (Modernphilosophy) History includes ideas of sun worship as far back as the earliest of civilizations. (Sun Worshippers Unite) Ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, the Aztecs of Mexico, the Incas of Peru and the Sumerians all have traces of Sun Worship in their past.  (Sun Worshipers Unite) In addition, it contributed to early practices in ancient Greece and Rome. The number of Sun Worshippers today is small but continues to grow. “All the matter and energy in all the realms of nature – all except the few that were created in the Big Bang – have their genesis in the sun. Every atom of your body was created in the sun’s atomic furnace”. (Modern Philosophy) So it stands to reason that Sun Worship is a logical expression of religious devotion. Today sun worship is practiced by many spiritual teachers and their followers. (Modern Philosophy)

“Sun worship is fairly simple. There is no mystery, no miracle, no pageantry, no one asks for money, there are no songs to learn, and we don’t have a special building where we all gather once a week to compare clothing. And the best thing about the sun, it never tells me I’m unworthy”...”So, I worship the sun! – George Carlin

Atheism: “If God really made everything, I’d say he has a quality control problem” – George Carlin (George, Woody)

Atheist, agnostic, humanist, secularist, skeptic, naturalist, and free thinker are all different terms people use to describe themselves when they don’t believe or aren’t sure if they believe in God. (Future of Atheism) George Carlin believed that since the beginning of organized religion the bloodiest of wars “have been based on religious hatred.”(Snarlin' Carlin) It stands to reason that people would rather take themselves out of the equation. Another big problem a lot of people are having with organized religion is the fact that “the heart of worship is surrender” and that those people who surrender to God’s word so freely do so even if it doesn’t always make the most sense. (Future of Atheism) Many of those who renounce their faiths do so because the price of knowledge was simply too high.

“Never believe anything anyone in authority ever says. None of them: government, police, clergy, the corporate criminals” – George Carlin (Snarlin’ Carlin)
