The 10 Commandments are said to have been given directly to the people of Israel by God at Mount Sinai after He had delivered them from slavery in Egypt.

The following are the 10 Commandments as found in Exodus:

1.
I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. You shall have no other gods before me.
2.       You shall not make for yourself a graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under; you shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your god am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third or fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love and keep my commandments.
3.       You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain.
4.       Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work; but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God; in it you shall not do any work; you, or your son, or your daughter, or your manservant, or your maidservant, or your cattle, or the sojourner who is within your gates; for six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day; therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it.
5.       Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be ling in the land which the Lord your God gives you.
6.       You shall not kill.
7.       You shall not commit adultery.
8.       You shall not steal.
9.       You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour.
10.   You shall not covet your neighbours’ house, you shall not covet your neighbours wife, or his manservant or his maidservant or his ox, or his ass, or anything that is your neighbours.

George Carlin's 2 Commandments???

Are the Ten Commandments
Relevant in Society Today?

1.       The problem with this commandment is the fact that there are many religions to choose from. This commandment prohibits a persons’ right to choose. Everyone should have the right to choose for themselves the path they wish to take.

2.       In every Catholic Church I have ever visited, they have statues, pictures, wooden carvings, etc. of Jesus hanging from the cross. Assuming that Jesus is in heaven this one breaks the part of the commandment that says “or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above or that is in the earth beneath”.

3.       The typical exclamation of someone who stubs their toe, drops their books or fails a test is “G**D***it!!!” Simple and true. If this commandment still applies half of Memorial University is going straight to Hell.

4.       Next we come to the Sabbath. In today’s society this one falls flat. Practically every store is open for at least part of the day on Sunday’s. Not to mention the fact that the Sabbath is actually Saturday. We observe it as a Sunday but either way, stores are still open and students use the weekend to catch up on homework.  Observing the Sabbath is not really practical if you need to finish a twenty page paper for your History class.

5.       It is difficult not to agree with Carlin on this one. There are so many parents who simply do not deserve respect; the father that walks out on the family because he simply is ready for responsibility, the meth addicted teenage mother who refuses to stop even when she is pregnant thus birthing a baby who with mental defects and is  addicted as well.

6.       Again, we have to agree with Carlin. ” More people have been killed in the name of god than for any other reason”. Not to mention the fact that some states still have the death penalty.

7.       Next we have “adultery”. If you look at Mark 10:11-12 Jesus states that “Whosoever shall put away his wife, and marry another, committeth adultery. And if a woman shall put away her husband, and be married to another, she committeth adultery." If divorced people are adulterers, and the punishment for adultery (as stated in Leviticus 20:10) is death, does that then mean that we should kill all of those who divorce? If that is so, that it directly defies the sixth commandment.

8.       The next commandment seems to make sense. Stealing is still wrong. People still go to jail for it. The only problem really is that if a man were to steal to feed his starving family would that then be considered a sin?

9.       Again, this one has merit. Do not lie, it seems simple enough. This one stays.

10.    This one goes to Carlin too. Coveting is great for the economy. Why mess with a good thing.

So, back to the original question; do the Ten Commandments apply today? To a certain extent they do, however when it serves their purpose, people will lie, steal, cheat, kill and do innumerable other things to attain their desired outcome.
